What the day actually involves

Strip away the marketing and this is a team game played in a marked-out arena, either a darkened indoor maze of ramps and barricades or a set of outdoor woodland game zones. Kids are put in kit, given a safety briefing, split into teams and sent to play a sequence of short games with a marshal running each one. Between games there is standing around, drinking squash and arguing about who shot whom. That downtime is part of it, and it is the part that separates children who love this from children who go flat after twenty minutes.

The age split in our listings is stark. Of the 31 venues in this slice, 25 are marked as suiting teens aged 12 to 16 and 24 as suiting 8 to 12 — but only 9 are marked as suiting 5 to 8 year olds. That is not squeamishness on the venues' part so much as physics and attention span: the kit is heavy, the briefings are long, and a game where you lose and have to wait to rejoin is a hard sell to a five-year-old. Where younger children are catered for it is usually laser tag rather than paintball, indoors, with lightweight gear.

By age, roughly:

• Under five: not what this is for. Look at soft play instead.
• Five to eight: possible at the minority of venues that cater for it, and better as a short laser session than a half-day in the woods.
• Eight to twelve: the sweet spot. Old enough to follow tactics, young enough to be thrilled by the kit.
• Teens: the reason most of these places exist, and the age at which a birthday group runs itself.

Time, money and what tends to be on site

Where a visit length is recorded — 16 of the 31 — the median is three hours. Treat that as the real shape of the day: it is not a drop-in activity you slot around lunch, it is the afternoon. Outdoor paintball days in particular tend to run long, with travel to a site on the edge of town on top.

On price, 19 of the 31 sit in our moderate band and 6 in the cheap band, with 3 at premium. Paintball has a wrinkle worth knowing about: the headline session price often covers entry and a starter allocation of paintballs, and children who enjoy themselves will get through those and want more. Budget for that rather than being surprised by it at the counter.

Facilities, counting only venues where somebody checked and confirmed them: birthday parties at 28 of 31, which is 90% and tells you exactly who the core customer is; parking at 25; a café at 19, so around three in five confirmed somewhere to buy food. Baby changing is confirmed at 6 and a picnic area at 3 — thin, though on a site geared to teenagers that is not surprising, and the venues we have not checked may well have more. If you are bringing a baby along with an older sibling, ring ahead rather than assume.

The indoor-outdoor split is 18 outdoor to 12 indoor. Outdoor sites — Big Dunks Paintball in Cornwall, the Delta Force sites at Eccles, Paisley, Leicester, Birmingham and Newcastle — mean woodland, mud and weather, and a car boot full of wet clothes. Campaign Paintball and Laser Park at Esher offers both paintball and laser. Indoor arenas like Battlezone Yarm are the reliable wet-Saturday option and generally the gentler introduction.

When to choose something else

If your group spans a wide age range, this is a difficult day out — the eleven-year-old will want the full outdoor session and the six-year-old will want to go home after the briefing. If a child is anxious about noise, dark, or being singled out, the arena format tends to amplify all three. And if you want a couple of hours you can walk away from at any point, a three-hour median session with a fixed game schedule is the wrong structure.

Where it works, it works better than almost anything else for the eight-to-sixteen bracket: physical, social, and the rare kind of day out where the adults can genuinely sit down with a coffee at the 19 sites where a café is confirmed.
