Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a working industrial museum in the south of Sheffield, set around a group of listed buildings that once made agricultural scythes and other edge tools. Families can walk among the workers' cottage, the manager's house and the counting house, and watch the great waterwheels turn beside the dam that powered the site. The crucible steel furnace is one of the few of its kind still intact in the country, and the forges and tilt hammers are demonstrated on site. A newer welcome hub holds a timeline of the works, family activities and a gift shop, and a timber-framed play area was added for younger children. Much of the site is outdoors with an open green space for running around and picnicking, so it suits a relaxed visit of an hour or two. Some areas are reached only by steps and the ground is uneven, so families with buggies or limited mobility should check the access guide before visiting. The on-site café serves breakfast, lunch and coffee.
