A guide to what a round of mini golf actually delivers as a family outing, drawn from the 45 crazy golf and mini golf venues listed in this guide.
A round of crazy golf is a short, structured outing with a scoreboard at the end of it. That structure is the whole point. Unlike a playground or a soft play centre, where children disperse and you spend the visit counting heads, mini golf moves everybody through eighteen holes in the same direction, at roughly the same pace, with something to talk about at each one.
It lands best with primary-age children and up. Of the 45 courses in this guide, 78% are flagged as suiting 8-12 year olds and 69% as suiting teenagers — the highest two figures in the set, and no accident. That age can hold a putter properly, understands that a lower score is better, and will happily argue about whether a ball that bounced off the windmill counts.
Younger children are a different proposition. Preschoolers and 5-8s are each listed as suited at 64% of courses, toddlers at 58%, babies at 40%. A three-year-old will not play golf. They will pick the ball up, carry it to the hole, drop it in and declare victory, and on most courses nobody minds. Go in expecting that and it works. Go in expecting a scorecard and it does not.
Where visit length has been recorded — for 14 of the 45 courses — the median is 80 minutes. That is a genuinely useful number, because it tells you what kind of slot this fills. It is not a day out on its own. It is the thing you do before lunch, or after the beach, or to break up an afternoon that was drifting.
On cost, 69% of these courses sit in the moderate band and 27% in the cheap band, which makes mini golf one of the more predictable outings in the guide: you are buying a round per person, not a day ticket, and the bill is unlikely to surprise you.
The big practical variable is weather. Seventy-one per cent of the courses here are outdoor, 18% indoor, and 9% offer both. Somewhere like Arundel Putting Green in Littlehampton or Cannon Hill Park Mini Golf in Birmingham is a fine-weather proposition; a wet Saturday needs an indoor course or a different plan entirely. Some sit within larger attractions — Adventure Golf @ Adventure Island in Southend-on-Sea, Alton Towers Crazy Golf, Aztec Adventure Lost Valley in Evesham — where the golf is one component of a longer visit rather than the reason you came.
Facilities, as confirmed across the slice:
Where a figure falls short of 100%, that means nobody has confirmed the facility either way, not that it is missing. Courses vary enormously in how much they publish. If step-free access or changing facilities are non-negotiable for your family, ring ahead rather than reading absence into silence.
Mini golf is the wrong call in three situations. If you have a baby or a very young toddler and nobody older, there is nothing here for them — 40% suitability for under-ones reflects courses that tolerate a pram, not courses that entertain a baby. If you need a whole day filled, the 80-minute median tells you this is a component, not a plan. And if your children are at wildly different ages, an outdoor course can strand you: the ten-year-old wants to finish the round properly, the two-year-old wants to leave at hole four.
Where it earns its place is with a group of school-age children who need something to do together, in decent weather, for an hour and a half, with a café at the end. Places like Adventure Golf Northampton, Adventure Golf Island in Glenrothes or Berwick Mini Golf are built for exactly that.
