Central Museum occupies a grade II listed building built in 1905–6 as a library, funded by the Andrew Carnegie Trust. It reopened as a museum in 1981. Displays cover local archaeology, including the Prittlewell Princely Burial exhibition, natural history, and social history, alongside a yearly programme of temporary exhibitions. The ground floor is fully accessible; the first floor, which houses the Planetarium and toilets, is inaccessible as the museum has no lift. There is a gift shop; no refreshment facilities are inside the museum.
