Mersea Island Museum is a volunteer-run local history museum in the centre of West Mersea, on the Essex coast. It was founded in 1976 in a red brick building that has been extended over the years, and its displays cover the island's heritage, including fishing, boats and everyday village life. A replica fisherman's cottage stands among the exhibits, with toys and games from earlier decades that give younger visitors something to look at and try. The museum has a small garden at the back, and the trust also runs talks and events. It suits families who are spending a day on the island and want a rainy-day indoor stop, or older children curious about the coast and the sea. Visits are short and easy to fit around a walk along the seafront or a meal in the village.

Questions parents ask

How long should we allow for a visit?
Most visitors spend about an hour here. The museum has displays on local fishing, oystering, boat building and natural history, plus a Resource Centre with computers offering access to images, articles and parish records.
Will it work if the weather is bad?
Yes, it's entirely indoors. The museum is housed in purpose-built premises in the centre of West Mersea, making it a good option when rain is forecast.
Are children entertained here, or is it just for grown-ups?
Children are actively welcomed, with puzzles and quizzes available throughout the museum to keep them engaged alongside the main displays.
