Clayton Hall is a Grade II* listed moated manor house set in Clayton Park, and the volunteer-run museum inside lets children explore it hands-on. Six Victorian rooms are set up with dressing-up costumes and activities, so younger visitors can see what everyday life was like in the late 1800s. There are winding staircases to climb and a Tudor section with a tearoom and gift shop. Free history talks cover the Hall and its owners, including the Chetham connection, and a Memories Room holds a local history collection. Open days are free and do not need booking, though children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Some upper rooms are not wheelchair accessible because of the building's listing, and the grounds include a moat bridge and uneven paths in places. It suits families looking for a relaxed, unusual local history outing in the city.
