The Avro Heritage Museum tells the story of the aircraft built on the old Woodford airfield, from early pioneering flight through to the jets of the nuclear age. The centrepiece is an all-white Vulcan bomber that stands outside the building, and inside there are famous British-built aeroplanes to look at, including the Lancaster, Nimrod and BAe 146 lines. Children can look inside several preserved cockpits, which are reached by steps, and interactive attractions such as a flight simulator, a virtual reality wartime raid and a motion simulator add something hands-on. The museum is run by volunteers as a registered charity and has a café with views of the Vulcan. Schools and youth groups can book guided educational visits, and families are best served by checking the current calendar before setting out.
