Wigan Museum occupies the former Wigan Free Public Library on Library Street, a Gothic Revival building by Alfred Waterhouse that opened in 1878. Known for many years as the Museum of Wigan Life, it presents the borough's past through displays on local industry, sport, music, wartime and everyday life, drawn from a collection of around 30,000 objects. The museum describes itself as especially welcoming to families, and entry is free. Upstairs, the Wigan Local Studies department offers family history resources, including local newspapers and electoral registers on microfilm, along with public computers. School visits, workshops and events run through the year. Its ground-floor galleries are being redeveloped at present, so check the museum's own page before travelling.
Ground-floor galleries closed for redevelopment from 25 July; reopening Summer 2027 as stated on the museum site.
