A council-run museum in Stockport town centre, where nearly a mile of tunnels cut into red sandstone was dug in 1939 to shelter local people during air raids. Visitors can walk through the underground network at their own pace, with displays and restored wartime rooms showing what life was like in Britain during the Second World War. Children under 16 are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult, so families can visit together. The shelters are also used by school groups studying the war. Some floors in the tunnels are uneven, and the site is underground, so it suits older children and adults who are comfortable with enclosed spaces. Evening explorer tours that go into unlit areas are restricted to visitors aged 16 and over.
