Staircase House is the oldest townhouse in Stockport, a Grade II* listed medieval building in the middle of the town's historic Market Place. The rooms are arranged as period displays that take visitors from the 15th century through to the 1940s, showing how local families lived across those years. The highlight for many visitors is the Jacobean cage-newel staircase, one of only three surviving in the country. The house is hands-on, so visitors are invited to touch the furniture and objects and try the activities laid out in the rooms. The council also runs craft workshops here and seasonal events such as Father Christmas visits, which give families a reason to come back during the year.
