Elizabethan House is a Grade II* listed merchant's house on New Street in Plymouth's Barbican, run by The Box as part of its historic sites. Visitors look around each carefully restored room at their own pace on a self-guided visit, with background sounds and scenes that bring the house's past to life. Stories are told through the people who lived there over four centuries, from the first owner to a washerwoman and a wig maker, and the rooms show how life differed between rich and poor. Staff and volunteers are on hand to answer questions. Because the house is old, with a narrow spiral staircase, low ceilings and uneven floors, it suits older children and curious families more than very young ones, and food and drink are not permitted inside. It makes a short, atmospheric stop alongside the wider Barbican waterfront. The house is currently closed for the winter and is due to reopen in spring 2027.
