Totnes Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle on a hilltop above the town of Totnes in South Devon. Children can climb the steep mound and the steps up to the stone shell keep, then walk the wall-walk to look out through the battlements. From the top there are open views over the rooftops, the River Dart and the moors beyond. The inner bailey is grassy and wooded, with picnic tables under mature trees, so it works well as a stop for a packed lunch and a run around. Families can also follow the moat walk and a World Builder trail set by the operator. Parts of the site are steep and there are steps, so it suits children who are comfortable on uneven ground. The site is outdoors and the castle is managed by English Heritage, with a small shop and soft drinks at the ticket office.
