Dawlish Museum fills eleven rooms across three floors of The Knowle, a historic house in the middle of the Devon seaside town. The displays cover Dawlish from Victorian resort days to the present, with rooms on local industries, porcelain, geology and shops the town has lost. The best-known item is the bagpipes played on Sword Beach on D-Day, shown in the Piper Bill room alongside a large collection of old town photographs. A display on the storm of 2014 that damaged the railway line brings the story up to recent years. Younger visitors can enjoy the children's dressing-up rail, colouring, chalk boards and brass rubbing, and there is a dolls room and a small garden. The museum is run by volunteers and suits a rainy afternoon or a short visit between beach and train. It is compact, so a family can see it comfortably in an hour.
Open June to September only.
