What’s there
- Free parking
- Picnic area
- Dogs welcome
Free parking around 100m from the castle along a country lane with no pavement; three disabled parking spaces by the entrance where visitors can be set down.
Only facilities we’ve confirmed are listed — anything missing here we simply haven’t checked, rather than know to be absent.
The ruins of this castle sit on a wooded ridge above a fast-flowing river, a short walk from Okehampton town centre. Families can climb the keep mound for views over the valley, explore the remains of the 14th-century buildings that stretch towards the tall gatehouse, and follow woodland paths around the site. There is a riverside picnic area with benches and plenty of grass for a blanket, and the site is known for its wildlife. Steps and uneven ground mean sturdy footwear is sensible, and some areas are steep, so younger children will need close supervision. Dogs on leads are welcome. Guided tours run on selected dates and school or group visits can be arranged through the site. Opening depends partly on volunteer availability, so check ahead before travelling.
