St Nicholas Priory is the oldest surviving building in Exeter, a Grade I listed site where a medieval monastery, a Tudor merchant's house and Victorian tenements all sit within one historic building. Families can wander through rooms furnished to reflect different periods, including the Tudor parlour and a kitchen with two fireplaces, and look at the garden of medicinal herbs and spices. The building suits school-age children who enjoy history, and the venue offers a brass rubbings trail, workshops, re-enactments and performances through the year. Self-guided visits are possible, and volunteers are on hand to answer questions. The priory is a small, relaxed place, so it works well as a short stop in the city centre rather than a full day out.
