Powderham Castle is a historic family home on the banks of the River Exe, just outside Exeter, where the Courtenay family has lived since the castle was begun in the 1390s. Families can join a guided tour of the house, or wander through the gardens at their own pace. The grounds are a big draw for children: there is a play area in the walled garden, a pets corner with farm animals, and a deer park where fallow deer roam. Trails, crafts and themed activity packs run through the year, and the estate hosts seasonal events and family days. The castle is more of a heritage visit than a play centre, so it suits families who enjoy history and outdoor space together, with plenty of room to picnic on the lawns.
