Compton Castle is a fortified medieval manor house in the Devon countryside, home to the Gilbert family for centuries. Families can explore the Great Hall, the solar and sub solar, the chapel and the medieval kitchen. Outside, a small formal garden has a medieval-style knot garden, a rose garden and an orchard, with lawns to spread out on. The National Trust runs family activities here, including a nature trail, garden games and costumes to try on. The castle is small, so it suits a relaxed morning out with younger children and older children who enjoy history and castles. The grounds include steep slopes and uneven paths, so it is worth planning ahead if you are bringing a pushchair.

Castle and garden open April to October per the National Trust page; check before travelling.
