Castle Drogo is the last castle built in England, finished in the 1930s for a grocery entrepreneur and designed by Edwin Lutyens. Its granite rooms, tapestries and modern touches make it an unusual house to explore with children, and the castle has a visitor centre with a café and shop. The grounds are a real draw for families: a high garden with lawns, terraces and a rhododendron area, a Bunty House to play in, and paths that drop down into the wooded Teign Gorge along the river. Kids' trails and activities run through the grounds during school holidays, and there are benches and a picnic area near the car park. The estate suits a mix of ages, from pushchairs on the garden routes to older children happy on longer walks. Dogs on leads are welcome in most areas.
