A small volunteer-run local history museum in the stannary town of Ashburton, on the edge of Dartmoor. The displays fill three floors of a Grade II listed building and tell the story of the town, from its medieval stannary role and the woollen trade to local geology and the people known as Ashburton Worthies. Families with older children who enjoy history or the moors will find old tools, photographs, posters and documents to look at, and the building itself has an interesting past as a former brush factory. A surprise for many visitors is the collection of North American artefacts. The museum is compact, so it suits a short visit, which can be combined with a stroll around the town's shops and tea rooms.
