Housed in part of an original wartime Nissen hut on the Blackdown Hills, this small heritage centre tells the story of the American troop-carrier airfield that prepared aircraft and paratroops for the Normandy invasion in 1944. The displays centre on a large collection of period photographs showing pilots, crews and troops before they flew out. There is also film from the D-Day landings, wartime uniforms and weapons, models and dioramas, and a section on the home front. Children can dress up in uniforms, which makes it a good stop for older children with an interest in history. The centre is staffed by volunteers who are happy to talk through the exhibits. Guided tours of the surviving airfield are available by prior arrangement, and a local pub nearby serves food on opening days.
