The Monastic Way Exhibition sits within the grounds of Buckfast Abbey, a working Benedictine monastery in a valley on the edge of Dartmoor. It is an immersive, hands-on presentation that follows monastic life from its origins up to the present day, and it is pitched at families as well as school groups. Visitors move through a series of themed areas covering the Abbey's own story, the rule of St Benedict, and what a day in the life of a monk involves. The displays combine sound and visuals, which keeps younger visitors engaged. Children aged 11 and under are admitted free, and older children and adults pay a small per-person entry fee. The exhibition works well as a half-hour stop alongside a walk around the Abbey church and gardens, which have lawns and picnic areas that children can run about on. The gift shop sells plants and gifts, and the on-site cafe serves light refreshments.
