Exeter's Underground Passages are medieval vaulted tunnels built to carry fresh water into the city, now run as a guided heritage attraction by Exeter City Council. Visitors start in an interpretation centre with interactive displays, a talking figure of a medieval man, a fly-through video and a full-size model of a section of the passages, plus artefacts from a nearby archaeological dig. A short film comes next, then a guided walk of about 25 minutes through lit, vaulted passages beneath the streets. It suits school-age children and older families who enjoy history and a bit of adventure. The passages are low and narrow in places, so it is best for children comfortable in enclosed spaces. Special events run through the year, including Easter egg hunts and wartime and Christmas-themed sessions. Booking is advised at weekends and in school holidays.
