Crediton Museum sits on the ground floor of the Old Town Hall on the High Street and tells the story of the town and the villages around it. The highlight for many visitors is a detailed model of the High Street as it looked before the Great Fire of 1743, which gives children a clear picture of how the town once looked. Exhibitions draw on the local society's photographs and documents, and a new themed display each year keeps the rooms fresh, with recent additions including objects dug up in archaeological digs in the town. There are interactive display units and interpretation boards that suit curious younger visitors, and a small shop sells local history books and old postcards. The museum is small, so a visit usually takes under an hour, and it pairs well with a town trail leaflet that takes families around historic spots such as the parish church and the statue of St Boniface. Admission is free, with donations welcome.
Summer opening roughly late April to October, with a themed summer exhibition each year.
