Finch Foundry is a 19th-century forge beside the River Taw on the edge of Dartmoor, where water wheels still drive tilt hammers, drop hammers and a grindstone. Guided tours let families watch the machinery in action and hear how edge tools for farmers and miners were made here at its peak. The loud machinery is best appreciated with a guide, and children can see the forge, the carpenter's workshop and the tool collection up close. Outside there is a picnic garden, a short riverside walk and the Tarka Trail passing through the village, so a visit can be combined with a walk. The site is run by the National Trust and suits families with an interest in history, industry and traditional crafts, especially school-age children.
