The Museum of Dartmoor Life sits in a cobbled courtyard in the centre of Okehampton, on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park. Housed in a former mill across three floors, it tells the story of the moor from the Bronze Age through to the mid-twentieth century. Families can see a reconstructed Bronze Age hut, a wheelwright and blacksmith's workshop, a tin mine display and a Dartmoor cottage interior, and find out how cider was pressed and how farming and domestic life worked on the moor. The museum runs workshops and activities for children, and there are audio guides to listen to as you explore. Younger visitors often enjoy the object-led displays and the folklore themes, such as the stories of piskies and ghostly hounds. Step-free access is provided by lift to all floors, and assistance dogs are welcome. The museum is a good first stop before walking or cycling on the moor.
