Fairlynch Museum sits in a thatched cottage a short walk from the beach in Budleigh Salterton and covers the history and nature of East Devon. Rooms are packed with costume, lace, toys and bears, geology and archaeology, smuggling stories and the local railway, so there is usually something that catches a child's eye. Downstairs a smugglers' cellar adds a bit of atmosphere for curious younger visitors. Upstairs an exhibition space hosts changing art and photography shows. The collections are looked after by volunteers, who are happy to answer questions. The visit suits a rainy afternoon or a break from the seafront, and it is a relaxed one-hour-or-so browse rather than a big attraction. Children under 16 get in free, and the museum has a shop for souvenirs and small gifts.
Seasonal opening, April to autumn; the homepage gives 2026 dates.
