The Axminster Heritage Centre sits in a Grade II listed former carpet factory in the middle of this East Devon market town. It holds the old Axminster Museum collection, which moved here from its earlier premises, and presents the town's story from prehistoric and Roman times through its market charter and brush-making industry to the world-famous carpet trade. Families can follow a children's trail with dressing-up points and interactive activities in the modern museum displays. A 1930s Crabtree loom is run on some days, and there is a small garden in the courtyard about the plants used for carpet dyes. The centre also holds temporary exhibitions, talks, craft courses and events through the year, and a gift shop and local information point sit in the entrance. It suits a rainy afternoon in town or a stop on a visit to the Axe Valley coast.
Winter opening is much reduced. A July 2026 press release says the charity faces an uncertain future and the centre could close as early as summer 2027 without funding.
