Buckland Abbey sits in the Tavy Valley on the edge of Dartmoor and is looked after by the National Trust. The former monastery was converted into a Tudor house after the Dissolution, and visitors can walk through its rooms, which are part museum and part house, with displays linked to the seafarers who once lived there. Nearby, the medieval Great Barn is a tithe barn that still stands much as it was built. Outside, the Elizabethan garden, walled kitchen garden and wild garden offer space to wander, and a natural play area made from estate timber gives younger children balance beams and room to climb and run. Ancient woodland tracks on the estate suit family walks, and there is a coffee shop and a gift shop on site. Dogs on leads are welcome in most outdoor areas.
