Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is a preserved Royal Flying Corps home-defence airfield from 1916, now run as an accredited museum on a large site of grassland and woodland in the Essex countryside. The original wartime buildings survive largely intact and are open to explore. Families can join a guided tour around two hangars of vintage aircraft, wander through exhibition rooms set inside the First World War buildings, and try the pedal planes and interactive cockpits. Children tend to enjoy the open spaces and the woodland nature trail, and well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome on normal open days. The Airmen's Mess café serves homemade food, and the shop sells models and souvenirs. Seasonal events such as air shows and fly-ins add to the programme, though these draw bigger crowds and can need advance booking.
Seasonal opening (Feb to early December, Fri to Sun). Air shows and fly-ins are special event days with separate pricing and advance booking.
