A short passenger miniature railway that runs around the grounds of the Museum of Power, a former water pumping station in Langford near Maldon. Children can ride the trains on a scheduled set of days rather than whenever they like, so a family visit works best when planned around the museum's event Sundays and school holiday Thursdays. The railway sits alongside the working steam and engineering collection, the Astaria model village and the Steam Pump Tea Room, which gives families a varied afternoon. The museum describes itself as dog friendly and has riverside walks, and it also runs school visits and family events through the year. Check the museum's calendar before travelling, because the trains are not offered every day the museum is open.
Questions parents ask
- Is the miniature railway suitable for young children and toddlers?
- Children must be able to sit astride the narrow-gauge carriage for stability and safety reasons, which rules out very small toddlers unable to do so. Carers accompanying a child requiring assistance travel free, and children aged 2 and under go free.
- Will the trains run in bad weather?
- The trains operate subject to weather conditions, so poor weather may affect running. It's worth checking with the Museum on the day before your visit to confirm whether trains will be operating.
- Is there somewhere to eat at the Museum?
- There is a Tea Room on site, and dogs are welcome if you prefer to bring a picnic and explore the wider Museum grounds.
