Ashdon Village Museum is a small, charity-run museum set in a village in north Essex. Its collection of household objects, farming tools and village memorabilia is arranged in rooms and displays that recreate shops, a kitchen and other scenes from past village life, so children can see how everyday things were used in earlier times. Visitors can follow a QR code trail around the village streets as well as exploring inside. The museum also runs educational activities linked to its objects, including school-holiday themes such as old-fashioned toys, and it works with the village primary school. A volunteer-staffed tea room serves drinks and home-made cake, which suits a relaxed afternoon out. Because it is run by volunteers and opens only at certain times of year, it is best checked before a visit. Families with an interest in history, or children who like looking closely at old objects, are likely to enjoy it.

Seasonal: open Easter to end of October on Sundays and Bank Holidays; closed winter.

Questions parents ask

Is there somewhere to eat?
Yes, the museum has a tea room serving fresh pots of tea and a selection of cakes. Do plan time to take afternoon tea and chat about what you've seen. Please note that only cash payments are accepted for refreshments.
How long should we allow for a visit?
The page suggests allowing time not only to see the museum but also to sit down in the tea room afterwards, implying a leisurely afternoon visit is expected rather than a quick hour.
Can we visit on a weekday, or only at weekends?
The museum is open Sundays and Bank Holidays only during its season. If you have a group of 10 or more people, extra opening hours are available by request.
