The Royal Engineers Museum sits near the centre of Gillingham and is billed as Kent's largest military museum. Its galleries follow the Corps of Royal Engineers over more than three centuries, from bridge-building and fortifications to diving, surveying, photography and flying. Highlights include a large collection of Victoria Crosses, Wellington's map of Waterloo, a Harrier jump jet and a V2 rocket. Larger vehicles, including bridge-laying tanks, are displayed outside in the grounds. Families can find hands-on exhibits, dress-up areas and a family activities programme, and there is a café with children's options and high chairs. Visitors with young children will find the galleries are mostly step-free and buggy-friendly, with a separate route for the First World War trench display. The museum suits older children with an interest in history and younger ones who enjoy seeing big machines close up.
