The Battle of Britain Memorial sits on the clifftops at Capel-le-Ferne between Dover and Folkestone, looking out over the Channel. Its centrepiece is a sculpted pilot gazing across the water, and a long wall lists the aircrew who flew in the 1940 battle. The Wing, a visitor centre shaped like a Spitfire wing, holds the Scramble Experience, an audio-visual show with a video wall and hands-on interactive displays that gives younger visitors a sense of what the summer of 1940 was like. A first-floor cafe has wide views across the Channel towards France. Replica Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft stand on the site, and an audio tour lets families walk the grounds at their own pace. Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds, though only assistance dogs go inside the building. The site is on a cliff top, so parents should keep a close eye on small children. It suits families with older children and anyone interested in wartime history.

Questions parents ask

Is it manageable with a toddler and an older child at once?
The site is on a clifftop with slopes and parents are warned to keep close watch on children. The Scramble Experience and most exhibits should suit a range of ages, though the cliff-edge setting requires extra supervision.
Is there anywhere to eat?
The Cockpit Café on the first floor of The Wing serves hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, paninis, snacks, ice creams, cake, cream teas, beer and wine. A lift is available to reach it.
How long should we allow?
An interactive audio tour takes about an hour to complete. The site offers multiple exhibits including The Scramble Experience, aircraft replicas, The Wall, and The Wing, so a full visit could easily take longer.
Is there parking, and is it a walk from the car?
There is ample on-site parking with designated accessible spaces close to the entrance. The car park is right at the site, so it is not a long walk.
Which ages get the most out of it?
The site suits all ages from preschool to teen, with immersive exhibits, interactive activities, and replica aircraft. The Scramble Experience offers hands-on learning for children.
