Facilities

We haven’t checked this venue’s facilities yet. Give them a ring if something specific matters for your visit.

An underground civil defence command post built in 1954 and left largely as it was once operations ended, now open to visitors on guided tours. Rooms include a domestic fallout room, a communications room and a replica radiation monitoring post, and a government film on protecting the public from nuclear attack is shown during the visit. A WE177 air-dropped nuclear bomb is also displayed. The tour suits older children and teenagers with an interest in history, technology or the Cold War, and it works well as a shared activity for a family with a teen. Access is down a flight of steep steps with no lift, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users, and there are no toilets inside the bunker. Tours must be booked in advance through the borough council.
