Drapers Windmill is a restored 19th-century smock mill on St Peter's Footpath on the edge of Margate, looked after by a volunteer charity in partnership with Kent County Council. Visitors are guided round the mill, and when volunteers run the sweeps and the old gas engine, children can see how a working windmill turns local grain. A small museum and workshop holds mill artefacts and archaeological finds from the site. The upper floors are reached by steep stairs, so a film and CCTV screen show the higher levels for anyone who cannot climb them. The visit suits families with children who enjoy history, machinery and seeing something old still in use, and it costs nothing to get in.
