Tonbridge Castle is a motte and bailey castle with a well-preserved 13th-century gatehouse, sitting just off the high street in Tonbridge. The venue presents itself as a family day out, and families visit to climb the gatehouse stairs, look around the great hall and armoury, and see the medieval life recreation that the audio tour guides you through. The rooms are dark in places and include life-like models, so the site suits older children and is best with an adult alongside. Younger children may find the steep steps hard going. The grounds are a more relaxed option: there is a bailey lawn where visitors can picnic, and the castle grounds are open for walking and looking at the motte. A gift shop sells drinks and snacks. The castle also runs seasonal events and markets through the year, so check what is on before you go.

Venue holds regular markets, concerts and seasonal events; check the what's on page before visiting.
