A small museum in Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey, set within the grounds of a prison and housed in a former RAF building. It tells the story of the first aircraft factory in Britain and the early flying days at the nearby airfield, with the Short Brothers, the Wright Brothers and the Royal Naval Air Service all part of the account. Displays include aircraft models, photographs and exhibits covering the pioneer era through to the First World War. The museum is run by volunteers, who are happy to talk visitors through the collection, and there is a short introductory film. It suits older children with an interest in history, planes or engineering, and families can combine a visit with the nearby coast. Under-16s go free, and school groups are welcome if they book ahead. The museum is open only on certain days of the week, so check before travelling.
Questions parents ask
- Is the museum manageable with a buggy and children of different ages?
- We haven't confirmed whether buggies are manageable round the museum, or which ages get most from the exhibits. Contact the museum directly to discuss your family's needs.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- The museum doesn't state how long a typical visit takes. We'd suggest contacting them to ask, especially if you're planning to join a guided tour with one of the volunteers.
- What should we bring, or is there anywhere to eat?
- The museum runs a café where visitors can get refreshments, though we haven't confirmed its opening times or what it serves. Bring a picnic as a backup if you prefer to eat outdoors.
- Can we just turn up, or do we need to book?
- You can visit without booking on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. However, groups of 10 or more and all school parties must contact the museum in advance to prebook.
