Dover Transport Museum is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers, set in the Whitfield area just outside Dover. Its two large exhibition halls hold a mix of vintage road transport, a well-known collection of Norman motorcycles, a restored Romany caravan and a steam roller, alongside recreated shop fronts and street scenes of old Dover that give younger visitors a sense of how things used to be. A visitor-operated model railway and a 5-inch gauge railway add something to watch and try, and there are displays on the car and train ferries and the Channel Tunnel. The museum suits families with children of all ages, particularly those with an interest in cars, buses, bikes or trains, and it runs school and group visits by arrangement. Opening days are limited, so it is worth checking before a trip.
