A volunteer-run museum housed in Foresters' Hall on Oxford Street, telling the story of Whitstable through diving, fishing, shipwrecks, shipbuilding and oysters. The main draw for families is the 1830 steam locomotive Invicta, shown alongside a restored whelk boat, an 1867 fire engine and an 1830 beam engine. The museum says it particularly welcomes children from around three years old, with hands-on activities, boxes of objects to handle and dressing-up, plus a museum trail. Exhibits also cover actor Peter Cushing, who lived in the town. The museum is compact, so a visit suits an easy hour or two, and the courtyard garden is a sheltered spot to sit or picnic. Whitstable's harbour and seafront are a short walk away.
