Matfield House is a Georgian family home on the edge of the large village green in Matfield, Kent. Built in 1728 for a yeoman farmer and his wife, it is a Grade I listed building that has been opened to visitors by the family who live there. Visits are arranged in advance for small groups rather than walk-in tours, so families are best placed to book a quiet, relaxed outing. The house's pink and red brick frontage, rear stair hall and period rooms give older children a tangible sense of how a Georgian household lived, and the owners present it as a suitable place for relaxed family outings. Visits are usually taken in the house and the gardens, with the courtyard and family kitchen also part of the tour. Because the house is a private family home, it suits children who can keep to a guided pace, and parents should check the current opening arrangements before planning a trip.
