Dickens House Museum sits in the cottage that inspired the home of Betsey Trotwood in David Copperfield, overlooking Viking Bay in Broadstairs. Across two floors it shows letters, a writing box and other items connected with Charles Dickens and his long holidays in the town, along with a collection of prints by the illustrator Phiz. Recreated period rooms and displays of Victorian costume and memorabilia give younger visitors a way into the house as it might have looked in the story. The museum is small, so a visit suits a short family outing, and it pairs well with a walk along the seafront or the Dickens Town Trail. Volunteers staff the house and guided tours can be arranged. Groups and school visits are welcome, and there is a gift shop with Dickens-related books and gifts. A festive weekend with a short version of A Christmas Carol runs in late autumn and early winter.
