The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is a heritage line of one-third full-size steam and diesel locomotives running along the Kent coast between Hythe and Dungeness. New Romney station is the railway's headquarters and a sensible place for families to begin. On site there is a model railway exhibition, a heritage centre and a gift shop, and the station has toilets suitable for wheelchair users. Younger children tend to enjoy seeing the engines up close and taking a short ride, while older ones and adults often come for the engineering history. Stops along the line sit near beaches and marsh walks, so a journey can become a longer outing. Dogs are welcome on trains, and special events such as Santa trains run through the year.
Runs a reduced weekend timetable in winter and a fuller timetable in the main season; special events through the year.
Questions parents ask
- Can we bring a pushchair on the trains?
- We haven't confirmed whether buggies are practical on the trains themselves. Contact the railway directly to ask about space and accessibility for pushchairs on the carriages, as this will affect how manageable a visit is with younger children.
- Is there anywhere to eat at the stations?
- The railway has an eating and drinking section on its website, but we haven't confirmed what's available. You may want to bring a picnic as a backup, or check with them in advance about catering options at the stations.
- Which ages enjoy it most?
- The railway suits preschool through to teenagers, so there's appeal across a wide age range. Younger children typically enjoy the train ride itself, while older children may get more from the heritage centre and model railway exhibition.
- Will we need to book tickets in advance?
- Station-to-station tickets are available to purchase on the day at the ticket offices, so you can turn up without booking. Only Romney Rover all-day hop-on, hop-off tickets are available to purchase online beforehand.
