Danby Lodge is the flagship visitor centre of the North York Moors National Park, set in a former hunting lodge beside the River Esk. Entry to the centre is free, so a family day out here costs only the car park. Children can spend time on the outdoor adventure playground, Danby Den, which has swings, zip wires, slides and tunnels, and there is an indoor climbing wall. Interactive exhibits cover the wildlife, history and industrial past of the moors, including the Land of Iron display. Older children and adults can browse the changing contemporary art in the Inspired by gallery. Woodland trails and fairy houses in nearby Crow Wood give younger visitors something to explore on foot, and the café and gift shop make it easy to stay for a full day.
