The Astronomy Centre is a hilltop observatory run by experienced amateur astronomers on the Southern Pennines, close to the Yorkshire and Lancashire border above Todmorden. Families can look at the night sky through several telescopes, including a large Dobsonian instrument, on the public evening. When the weather is poor the evening usually switches to talks and presentations, so there is still something to see indoors. Visitors can also take a guided look round the facility, and volunteers are glad to explain what is on show. The centre is also a resource for members, offering solar observing and more specialist work. Because the main attraction is after dark, older children who can stay up for an evening session tend to get the most from it, and younger ones may enjoy a shorter visit. Group visits can be arranged outside the usual public evening.
