Queen's Mill sits on the bank of the River Aire in Castleford and is still a working flour mill, grinding wholemeal flour between its historic stones. Visitors can see the breastshot waterwheel, which was designed by the engineer John Smeaton, and hear how milling has been carried on at this spot for many centuries. The building is run by the Castleford Heritage Trust as a community hub, so it hosts a changing programme of talks, exhibitions, workshops and seasonal events. Children's activities are laid on for some of the open days and events, and creative spaces on site include a paint-your-own pottery studio. A tearoom, a craft beer bar and a coffee roaster share the complex, which makes it a relaxed stop for a short outing with children, especially on heritage open days when special events run.
