The Brunel Museum occupies a former steam pumping house beside the original shaft of the Thames Tunnel, the first tunnel built under a navigable river, designed by Marc Isambard Brunel and completed with his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The visit covers two linked buildings: the Engine House, which holds the collection and main exhibition, and the Tunnel Shaft, the former pedestrian entrance to the tunnel. It is a small site, so a visit takes around three quarters of an hour and suits older children who enjoy engineering, history and the story of the underwater concert held in the tunnel in 1827. Weekend guided tours run during the opening days, and the museum offers family learning sessions and downloadable activity sheets. The museum is dog-friendly, and there is no café on site, so families should plan to eat nearby.
