The London Canal Museum sits in a former ice warehouse built in the 1860s for the ice cream maker Carlo Gatti, beside the Regent's Canal basin at King's Cross. Families can peer down into one of the preserved ice wells in the ground floor, step inside a cramped narrowboat cabin and learn how the canals were built and worked. Exhibits cover the horses that pulled boats and ice carts, the cargoes carried, and the people who lived on the water. Archive film and recorded memories of former canal workers bring the story to life, and a tug and a canal boat can be seen from the wharf outside. It suits school-age children and older children who enjoy history, engineering or transport, and it is a short visit of around one to two hours. Boat trips run on some days in season and are booked separately.
