The Cinema Museum is a charitable museum set in the former Lambeth Workhouse in Kennington, south London, close to Elephant and Castle. Its collection gathers equipment, posters, vintage cinema seats, uniforms, tickets and other objects that trace cinema going from the early years of film to the present day. Visits are through guided tours of around two hours, run by volunteers, which include a screening of short films. The tours suit older children and teenagers with an interest in film, history or design, and they work best when a family is curious about how cinemas used to look and feel. The museum also keeps a large store of safety film, including adverts, trailers and public information films. Because the building is a working heritage site with a collection in active use, the museum is more of a special interest visit than a play-based day out, and younger children may find the two-hour format long.
