Banqueting House is the only surviving building of the former Palace of Whitehall, standing on the east side of Whitehall between Trafalgar Square and Parliament. Its single grand hall is known for the painted ceiling by Peter Paul Rubens, which is the main thing to look up at during a visit. The building is also linked to the execution of Charles I, and the Historic Royal Palaces site presents that story alongside the architecture. Because the visit is short and mostly about one room, it suits school-age children and older children who enjoy history, rather than younger children who need more to do. Children aged 5 to 15 are admitted free, and the venue also hosts school groups and community programmes outside its public open days. It is a compact royal-history stop that fits well into a walk around central London's landmarks.
Limited seasonal opening set by Historic Royal Palaces: summer hours and open days only.
