Facilities

The Royal Hospital Chelsea is a working home for the Chelsea Pensioners, retired soldiers of the British Army, set in grounds and courtyards in Chelsea. Visitors can enter the free interactive exhibition in the newly renovated Soane Stable Yard, which traces the history of the building and the lives of the pensioners over the centuries. The stable yard also has a cafe, a shop and a post office, and an activity room used for community events that bring children and families together with the pensioners. Guided tours led by a Chelsea Pensioner take in the Great Hall, the Wren Chapel and Figure Court, and some special tours reach a museum room that is not usually open to the public. Because the site is a residence as well as a visitor attraction, families should check current tour and event times before going. It suits a calm, historic outing rather than active play.
